CASE STUDY: FLOYDS STICKER SQUAD

Our dear friends at Lemonchili games called us to help on the art development of their new AWESOME action shoot em' up mobile game, that combines TIME TRAVELLING features, STICKERS and extraordinary art design. Read below, and find out what we worked on!

The big challenge

When the guys at Lemonchili games called us to work on the art development for a new project they were cooking called "Floyd's Sticker Jam", we were hooked on from the start.

It was not an easy challenge, as you can see. If there's one thing that completely strikes you as a player from the first moment you play the game, is the huge amount of art that has been crafted: from character design, bizarre worlds, enemies, BIG bosses, tons of FX, 3D assets, 3D and 2D trailers, a unique and very particular UI, and last but not least, the AWESOME hyper-real hollographic stickers in the album!

Floyd's Sticker Squad is basically a very trippy isometric shooter, that combines two BIG features: TIME TRAVELLING and STICKERS. To us, these two concepts had to be reflected on each asset, animation or design that we created.

 

The mix of these two very different worlds gave us the possibility to push it above and beyond, resulting in a unique style, which is grounded on a retro/classic - futuristic esthetic. This clearly shows on it's many elements which composite the whole experience: in-game you play on a classic isometric grid, floating through space and time, fighting against cool enemies that quickly remind us of the games we played when we were growing up. At the same time, it keeps the STICKER side present at all times: each UI screen emulates a unique "sticker" or toy blister, and every character and element that you play with IS actually a sticker, that you can find in the album.

This last feature is perhaps one of the pillars that we worked the most on, as the album is THE feature that really combines everything that the game offers. Through it, you not only collect really awesome stickers, but you also unlock content. It also serves as the gacha system for it's free-to-play structure.

Because of this we knew that this had to be a completely AWESOME experience. From opening regular, special, magic and legendary packs, to opening boxes from the store, collecting stickers and pasting them. Without shadow of a doubt, the most challenging AND rewarding task was the development of both the album and the stickers, but specially, the hollographic look of them.

Combining really cool designs and multi-colored textures, we successfully created hyper-realistic materials, that react to the device's gyroscope. This adds A LOT of value to the product, and let's be honest, they look REALLY great!

Overall, it was a long but very productive process. Through it, we learnt many things, changed many others, always thriving to reach the best possible outcome, as we always have. A clear example of this is our beloved main character, Floyd Warpo. You can see on the right some of interations we had, until we discovered it's final form, which we all fell in love with. In fact, we love how everything turned out, don't you?
