Mama Lucchetti - Kitchen Design Process

The kitchen design process was as important as our character design process. Being commercials of no longer than 30, 40 seconds, we needed to express a script, an idea, and not only that, but also introduce the audience to a world, in really little air time, which proved to be quite a challenge.

So we began designing all sorts of kitchens. Modern kitchens, untidy kitchens, classic kitchens, Barbie-style toy kitchens and so on…

As the characters we were designing were getting more and more simplified, our scenaries started looking more and more complex in comparison. At just a mere first glance, they just didn´t belong to the same world.

So we decided to try even simpler kitchens, like carton or paper cut-kitchens, where each element in the kitchen was more of a post-it or a sticker rather than the real thing…

Later we tried to traduce the character’s morphology to the kitchen as well… A bit inspired on Yoda’s home in The Empire Strikes back.

In the end, we went back to our original kitchen models and begun giving it a kind of theatre-look, where all elements were simplified, and looked directly to camera.\
